What We're Doing
Merchandise
The Green Caravan Tour merch table features organic cotton T-shirts, reusable canvas shopping totes, and recycled paper stationery. The blank greeting cards are real collector's items: hand-stamped and embossed by Vienna herself, on beautiful hemp fiber/post-consumer paper stock. (Pictures coming soon...)
Part of the proceeds from eco-friendly merchandise goes to the Green Caravan Tour fund, which will be donated to environmental groups—chosen by you, Vienna's fans!
Transportation
We're traveling in a Dodge Sprinter and fueling up with B20 whenever possible. The Sprinter's engine enables us to take advantage of biodiesel, a low-emissions, biodegradable, renewable fuel. Commercial-grade blends like B20 combine pure biodiesel with regular petroleum diesel, which makes it predictable and reliable enough for intensive touring. In addition, diesel engines get better mileage, allowing us to consume less fuel overall.
For flights (where no alternative fuel currently exists), we're offsetting our carbon emissions with Native Energy, which invests in alternative energy initiatives, particularly wind farms and methane capture projects.
Note: the search for clean, renewable energy is complicated, especially in the transport sector, and each of these measures has its own drawbacks. See the Q & A section for more thoughts on this.
Other Measures (every little bit helps!)
To reduce plastic bottle waste, we drink filtered water out of reusable containers, both backstage and on the road.
We ride bicycles whenever possible once we arrive in town, reducing cab rides and excess driving.
We buy organic and/or locally produced food whenever possible.
