I'm sorry if I'm bringing up a dead topic, thats already been discussed ,but I noticed archive.org was briefly mentioned in the "taping policy" announcement, and I was wondering if Vienna has looked into it. Its an excellent site that will strictly abide by the rules that the artist sets down. So even if someone uploaded a song that she did not want on there, they would immediately remove it at the artist's (or representative's) request. Its becoming really popular for singer/songwriters and indie bands, because so many people go on and download the concerts of these artists, even if they've never heard of them, and then they go out and buy the CDs. I've already done that with several of the artists on there Smile . They do prefer everything to be "lossless", mostly .SHN format (because more people make CDs from these files), but you are allowed to upload an .mp3 version (since more people prefer quick listening this way) as long as you also include the original lossless version.

I gave her the information on it last month. I haven't asked her about it. Even if she approves, I won't be able to put up any new shows because of the covers. I'm not willing to cut them out and upload incomplete shows. And I won't authorize MP3 versions of most of my recordings, though I'll make exceptions for a few shows. Other tapers are less stingy about the MP3 thing than I am, so there should still be plenty available. Plus I might change my mind, ya never know.

Newer shows are out, but I can upload a lot of older shows, ones I haven't been able to B&P until now, because Vienna's decided that it's OK to let out some of her older songs that haven't been released. I will be posting more about this when I get home from the show tonight - just want to make extra sure Vienna hasn't had second thoughts about those songs. I'm sure she hasn't, it's just desperate hope on my part, because I want them to be released somewhere Very Happy

I also will not authorize MP3 versions of my recordings.

I eagerly await the day Vienna's music is on archive.org I have a few shows I'd like to contribute, though the "unreleased song" clause of the taping policy makes it a little tricky.

What older unreleased songs can definitely be distributed at this point?

More shows? Details?

Current list is
Boy at the Piano
Signal Fire
In My Arrival
Undone
Rainwalk Song
Under the Lights

If it isn't one of those I can ask at an upcoming show.

Great - I've downloaded several Charlotte Martin shows that are fantastic. I still haven't got my CD-R to work right, so I'm probably gonna have to buy a new one. Thankfully I have a spare 160 GB hard drive, so I can just temporarily store all the SHNs in there while I'm waiting. Wink

Dunno what's wrong, haven't been contacted yet. ETree is down, so I probably won't hear anything until it comes back up.

Sorry guys...I'm new to this, so it's taking a while to figure out a good set of rules. :)

We've currently got things set so that I yay-or-nay uploads before they go public. What do you think: is this overkill or proper caution? I know Michele (and probably any other tapers on this forum) will honor restrictions, but I don't know who else is going to be doing this.

Also, I'm going to amend the taping policy yet again, to give the full OK to covers. From what the folks at etree.org and archive.org understand, there's no problem with free (i.e. no money exchanged) distribution of performances of covers. Just give songwriting credit where it's due, if you would.

Thanks Vienna, and all you tapers out there, for doing all this.
It's above and beyond for all of you. Thanks!

Really though, this is why it's taken so long - from what I've seen, most artists just go ahead and OK it, but I really wanted to see that you went through and read everything, see how it works, and make sure to get all the limits ironed out and good for what you want. So I'm all geeky fangirl happy to see you throwing around terms like B&Ps and stuff...

Oh, I guess that might be why mine's pending Wink You should note that in the limited policy area.

I don't think it's overkill, but it will probably be problematic while you're on tour...then stuff will just be pending, pile up, and then you get home, look at it all, then probably just approve most stuff anyway Laughing I don't know how well the curators look over everything, and I've heard some stories of stuff taking a while to be edited/deleted. And I'm sure none of them are familiar with your work.

Hi Vienna,
I don't think it's overkill at all. Hopefully all the tapers will respect your wishes and I'd imagine the ones from this board will, but you can't be sure so it's good for you to have a bit of control. Michele raised some good points in her post above mine and I really don't have anything to add, seeing as I'm not a taper or anything....so bye. Smile ~Ginny

I have no problem with honoring restrictions. Smile

I suggest giving this topic more exposure. At least get an entry into the BTAT section (bands that allow taping) list so that's one other means taken care of. I think this is linked to etree somewhere, but I can't remember. Vienna can also email the folks at easytree and thetradersden dot org to request that shows that haven't been approved can be requested to be removed.

There may be tapers out there who come and casually tape a show whether Vienna is opening or headlining, and especially in the case of opening they will not be aware of the distribution policy.

Does Vienna want copies of shows first to review and listen to first, before deciding on whether a recording should be uploaded to the masses? At her discretion she can say yay or nay because of a performance, content, or for whatever reason.

How about expanding this main site with an archived list of gigs/gigography section, add to it setlists, and known recordings, and with each one add a note that Vienna personally approves for distribution? This stuff is normally done by the fans on fansites, but wouldn't it be cool to have it all on one site?

Done, update is snoring in the pending list. Maintainer is slow Wink though I still need to edit it again for today's update.

The show I've uploaded has not automagically been linked to db.etree yet. I am not sure if it takes a few days, or if I need to do something to get the shows associated with the database. I'll ask about it when I get ahold of an admin.

Ohh yeah. For some reason The Traders' Den has decided they would rather be contacted first by an artist, then enforce, rather than honor a policy as stated, because of different interpretations and stuff. Easytree is a better at enforcing, but they do want concrete proof before they'll pull something. Etc etc etc I'll dig up the necessary e-mail addys and junk...
