Infinity Music Hall show

Postby Folkfan » Fri Jul 10, 2009 1:54 pm

OK, so I warned you that it was going to be a good show, here in Norfolk. I do admit, the venue is out there, in the sticks(but so worth the drive, the performers this venue is bringing in are diverse and talented..check out the schedule at www.infinityhall.com).
Seth Adam did a nice job as the opener and Vienna played a brilliant set, including playing "Augustine", which she said came about when she was doing a song writing exercise in restrictions, using only octaves, which simulates the sound of church bells. No need for dragging in 900 pounds of chimes, the song sounded GREAT! I was so thrilled to hear this song live.
It was great to see the Man in Blue again and see some familiar faces in the audience. It was also cool to see many," first time VT concert attendees", that were blown away by her performance. It reminds me of the first time I saw Vienna perform. Happily, I still am in awe, and have that feeling after every performance of hers that I'm lucky enough to attend.

Set list:
Whatever You Want
In Another Life
Gravity
Shasta
That's Where I'll Be(Brian Webb's song), with Seth Adam duo
Antebellum
The Tower
Stray Italian Greyhound
Last Snowfall
Recessional
City Hall
Augustine
Grandmother Song
Harbor

sorry, the venue (and i agree, it is an absolutely beautiful venue) did not allow recording. i was so tempted to just record the show anyway. it was an absolutely amazing show and a great way to end a 2 year drought of being able see her perform...oh how i miss watching vienna perform live. and she had this cool machine that recorded sounds that allowed her to have backup and harmony in a solo show...and i can't believe that she remembered me. still trying to convince her to come to shanghai.

Frowny face. Oh well, seeing it here makes me think it'll be much more active than it has been. A recording will soon come, i'm sure.

Rtu, very nice to meet you at the Infinity. I am really loving the effects Vienna is getting out of her looper, it's like she's got an entire set of back-up singers in a box. She even was playing a loop backwards, for a whole different sound. Vienna played Augustine last night as well and I'm thinking it might become part of the set-list for as long as she wants to play it. It sounded great, for the second time that I've heard it(Sorry Reileen, not trying to make you feel bad)...Yes, it's different from the studio version, but equally as good, she lets loose, vocally on ..."Oh..now I'm breaking down...breaking down", with strong emotion. I'm not sure what "Augustine" would/could sound like on a keyboard, but on grand pianos, I really don't miss the chimes(although visually, it would look pretty cool to have Alex hammering away on 8 foot tall tubular chimes/bells.)

I'm pretty sure that my first show, in January, was also the first show for the looper. She only used it for a couple of songs (Gravity intro and outro, for sure; maybe Last Snowfall?) and it wasn't a major contributor at that point. Interesting to watch progress.

thanks michele! only back temporarily. it was a shocker for me too. when i looked at the schedule awhile back, i thought my only shot was to see her tonight in nj, but then my plans changed and i couldn't make that show or any other show. then, my schedule opened up for 2 days last week enabling me to visit a friend in springfield and then go to the concert at infinity hall, my first since i moved to shanghai 2 years ago.

i'm so glad i got the chance since i probably won't be able to see vienna perform for at least year, maybe more if i extend my living in shanghai. and since it was so last minute, i didn't get to carve a shell for her...next time will be 2, perhaps a set of earrings.
