I just bought a DVD of "I Am a Fugitive From a Chain Gang" as a birthday present for my nephew. If you haven't seen this film, do yourself a BIG favor and rent it soon. It was years ahead of its time, in many ways. The beginning is a little slow, but once it gets going, it never lets up. The two chase scenes have been imitated to a fare-thee-well (the first one in 1994's "The Fugitive"). It was one of the first "social conscience" films, but never wallowed in preachiness. And that ending! Whew, it's just unforgettable.
Hard to believe it was made in 1932. It really holds up well. No contemporary filmmaker, mainstream or independent, could do better.
