Austin Lounge Lizards

The Austin Lounge Lizards are America's preeminent political/social satire band. Recently, I caught them at the Freight and Salvage in Berkeley. Been a long time since I laughed that hard.

Here's an example: Some time ago, they were commissioned by the Consumer's Union to lampoon the prescription drug industry. Boy, did they deliver. They wrote a song called, "The Drugs I Need." You can hear the song (along with some pretty good animation) here:

Another Lizards song could be considered the anthem of all musicians and artists. It's called, I'm Forty Years Old And Living In My Mother's Garage. Great song.

Yup- the lizards are not only a hoot, but fairly talented musicians and
songwriters to boot! Ever heard Pink Floyd done Bluegrass-style?

Haven't heard their Pink Floyd/Bluegrass mix yet, but I'm hoping they'll play it when they perform at the Freight and Salvage on October 1.

Good News/Bad News: "The Drugs I Need" is such a hit, Consumers Union has commissioned The Lizards to write another song. The new work will skewer media conglomerates. No doubt, it'll be great. But the downside is, they've decided to call it "The Tower."

Oh, my. Divided loyalties ....

No, not the same guys. They're known as just the Lounge Lizards. The AUSTIN Lounge Lizards are a different group.

I mentioned my divided loyalties over their new song, "The Tower." At a recent concert, I said as much to Conrad Diesler, one of the Lizards. He brightened and replied, "Oh, my, yes, Vienna Teng. My daughter LOVES her!"

Here's a link to THEIR "The Tower.

Three more: Their song "Christmas Time For Visa" is about predatory credit card companies:

"Go Ahead and Die" is about the Health Insurance Industry:

And finally, "Toast the Earth" is their tribute to the oil industry:

Great songs and animation. Worth signing the petitions, too.
