I don't know if that sketch of Vienna on the splash page as been there for a while (as I usually jump directly to the forums), but I just noticed it right now. Just out of curiousity, who did that sketch?

I have to claim responsibility for that. The idea was originally for the whole website to have a sketchy look. I guess that's still the idea, but it's taking a while to get there. *sheepish grin*

The lack of a picture of Vienna on the front page was getting to be an issue, though, so we went ahead and put that up about a week or so ago.

By the way, if one of you guys on a Windows box has a sec, could you take a screenshot and send it to me? I want to make sure the layout looks remotely like what I intended on various Windows browsers. Away from school I don't have access to machines from the Dark Side. ;) Thankee! :D

I have Windows XP/AOL at home and can't see the sketch either. I can see it at work on the Macs of course... :) ~G

As I mentioned in another topic, I can see the sketch on my Windows XP machine when running Netscape 7.02, but not when running IE 6.0. The basic layout of the page is the same with both browsers, but with IE there's a big empty space where Vienna should be. :(

I'd send screen captures to Eric, but I don't know how to do that...

Ah.. very nice Eric M.! *pat on back* By the way, very nice tactic to get the "Warm Strangers" to switch away from evil IE. Come on over to FireFox!

Anyway, here is a screenshot of the ViennaTeng.com splash page as seen on my computer.
<a href='http://members.lycos.co.uk/blogttm/vtsketch_lg.gif' target='_blank'>screenshot</a>
OS: Windows 98 yes... very outdated. I can't wait 'til I buy my iBook.
Browser: Mozilla FireFox 0.8
Resolution: 768x1024

I just wanted to toss in another $0.02 on the splash page layout. I don't think the problem lies with the lack of content (images, text, and otherwise) on the splash page, given that there are many sites designed in the minimalist style. Instead, it is just the positioning that's the issue. Right now, as I look at the splash page, my eyes are drawn to three locations: across the top, down the left side, and to the right bottom corner. The middle is still blank. Why not bring everything together and center it?

The site looks fine in Opera, in both Windows, and in Linux. Netscape on Solaris looks great too. However, IE on my XP box doesn't render the image. I know the CSS for background works in IE, but maybe the URl() is confusing it.

On the basis of standards, I would say screw IE, but on the basis of %age, I would say fix it so that it renders in both :P

Thanks for the screenshots and info, all. It appears that IE and AOL are, um, special with respect to their interpretations of CSS.

The middle is still blank. Why not bring everything together and center it?

Thanks for the feedback. This is partly another CSS issue. In Safari and a few other browsers, the title and menu are more centered. Whatever the "correct" CSS interpretation, this was the intent. :)

*sigh* Looks like it's back to tables and sliced images ... heheh.

I am glad someone is paying attention. I always come in through the front door and never noticed the change :(
Shows you how much I pay attention.

Frank

P. S. I am on the Netscape browser, running McAfee and Black Ice firewalls. No problems.

Eric - Check your junk mail folder, again! I sent you the fix, and it may have gotten rejected like the original. (I was able to get the source from the page, but had thought I'd need the CSS. Not so.)
