Back on October 20, 2004, the Vienna Teng Trio (featuring Marika Hughes and Alan Lin) played the Palms Playhouse in Winters, CA for the first time.

Last night, Vienna returned to the Palms Playhouse with Alex Wong and the poster for the 2004 performance was still on display.

Opening the show was Paul Freeman, who had previously toured with Vienna on the east coast and has since made attempts to write songs with both Vienna and Alex individually.

Vienna and Alex joined Paul on one of his songs during his set but I don't know the names of his songs to tell you which one yet.

Vienna and Alex's set went like this:

Go On Make Promises made its west coast debut, as officially did the Vienna/Alex version of Radio. Alex's guitar ran out of battery during homecoming, but Paul brought another 9-volt to the stage and he changed it out to play In The Creases. Vienna asked if anyone remembered all of the words to Mission Street before she played it and I don't know if she got all of them right but she finished the song without stopping it.

Paul and Vienna wrote Go On Make Promises together and Winters was the first time that Alex had ever played on it. They had previously only played the song in public at Rockwood Music Hall in New York.

The smoke from the outdoor pizza oven on the corner billowed through the old opera house post-show and it almost seemed like the whole small town was on fire.

The USB version of The Moment Always Vanishing includes a special thank you clip from Vienna and Alex recorded prior to the show. The Winters clip features Alex Wong on backstage stairs railing percussion, Paul Freeman commenting on how cold it is because he is in Winters, narrated by Vienna Teng.

(Previous clips from Seattle include Vienna and Alex describing their trip from Portland north to Seattle in the Pacific Northwest, while using a drawing of some Pacific islands and a clip of Vienna and Alex during Sara Watkins' soundcheck at Mississippi Studios.)

It was the first performance with just Vienna and Alex, I think, and the west coast debut. They played it with Ward at the Cafe Vivaldi shows for the album release.

Vienna managed to scrounge up all the words to Mission Street in the right order

As a side note, I feel that the looping background vocals for the Braid version of Gravity have finally fallen into place, in terms of its arrangement/timing. These things take a while

Gosh, I'm ridiculously excited for the shows at Yoshi's tonight! I hope they play RADIO! And the song she wrote with Paul. I listened to his stuff on Myspace a while back. Liked what I heard!

Does anyone know if "Go On Make Promises" is the title they are officially going with for the song they co-wrote? When I saw them perform it together @Rockwood, they were bantering about how it did not have a title yet. If I recall, they had just written it or just recorded it that day.

Vienna calls the song "Go On Make Promises" but Paul already has a song with Promise in the title, so it could potentially change in the future. They joked last night at Yoshi's that the song should be "Go On Make [random gestures]". I've decided to call it "Go On Make ..." for the time being.

We'll see what they call it tonight if they perform it again!
