Special Guest Appearance w/ The Paper Raincoat in SF 3/26/10

Oh man, last night was so awesome! Vienna got to play a couple of songs during The Paper Raincoat's headlining show at Noe Valley Ministry.

Here's her set list:

Everything's Fine* (co-written with Amber Rubarth at the writer's retreat)

Shortest set ever???

Well let's see...
V was also clap conductor during "Sympathetic Vibrations," conducting right from the pulpit.

Played piano for "Same Old Things"

Oh gosh. Why didn't I take notes? She also played the piano and the glock for one song...

She was awesome tambourine person for "It All Depends"

She also jumped in with some harmony and hand-slapping during "Rewind"

And of course, she sang her solo for "In The Creases."

Please add to this post, people-who-went-last-night! I'm still too dumb with excitement about the show...

*written from the point of view of an "unreliable narrator" (Mark Twain-esque). SUCH A GOOD SONG! I can't wait for the recording. It's so catchy-pretty-hard-hitting! Also featured Alex and Kevin on percussion. Swell of harmonies and percussion at the end gave me chills.

I have to say I was a little disappointed. A lot of the publicity (including the email from the Vienna Teng list) said "Vienna Teng performing with Paper Raincoat" and while it was technically true, she only did 2 brief songs, barely time to warm up and another opening act actually played a full set. I'm pretty sure many in the crowd were there to see Vienna (a few folks sitting next to me actually said they were there to see her). I think if she had done 4 songs or even 1 encore, I'd not be able to write this email, but it just didn't feel right. Even if it were another band and a guest artist just happened to show up and that guest artist was that much more of a draw than the band, I think the band would have deferred more. I felt like Paper Raincoat was determined not let their show be taken over by Vienna despite everyone in the audience wanting more of Vienna. But if that was the case, why include her so prominently in the billing of the show?

So this is nothing about the quality of the music played, I know that. The opening act was an amazing musician and the audience responded well. There weren't a lot of time constraints and it was a relaxed setting. Vienna should have been given a full set. And the evening should have closed with an encore that was a song of hers and a song of Paper Raincoats. Just saying...

Actually, the Noe Valley site AND The Paper Raincoat tweets and Facebook events said that Vienna was a "special guest" or was making a "special guest appearance." (Noe Valley calendar says Vienna "joins them in a few songs") Not prominent at all. Not even in her tour schedule. So I came in expecting her to be a TPR member of sorts, which is what we essentially got. Plus "Say Uncle" and the awesome new song "Everything's Fine." It was TPR's big show, after all.

Oh, I know that. Very nice, intelligent, and quirky people Warm Strangers are. Just didn't know what to call out without being awkward. "Excuse me, are you Rahau? (which I would have pronounced [ra-how]) I'm AAparallel! And I think you're Rahau because...I've seen your pictures" Haha.

That wouldn't be awkward at all. I've introduced myself to several Warm Strangers by saying, "Excuse me, aren't you ---?" They were always pleased when I recognized them.
