I recall Vienna saying something about Olive Tree and House being left off, because they didn't want the album to be too long. Plus now i feel SPECIAL ;D |

It is a beautiful song. Listening to it though, I personally think it sounds more like a track on Dreaming Through the Noise. Thematically, I see it as a blend of RomeoJuliet/Grease story with some Blue Caravan longing and Nothing Without You loneliness. Musically, it also sounds like a DTTN track. The vocals are low, and the song is pretty consistent throughout (although the "Oh how it rains sometimes..." part is so delightfully powerful. I don't know where this song would have fit into Inland Territory. Maybe at the beginning, somewhere between Last Snowfall and Antebellum? Or before or after In Another Life (I see some culture/family conflict in House).
I love this song, but think maybe it was right to leave it off Inland Territory, which as a unit is already so complete. _________________ "Drowning my pain in lemonade. . . Singing along to 'feelin' alright'" |

Pretty late posting here, but I've been thinking a lot about it. This song is definitely about a sorority/frat house in my eyes (And now I really want Vienna to name her next CD Sorority Serenades. Because of this song. Eric Cheng came up with this title many years ago, and you can read about it here.
The main reason I think this is because a Frat house is the only place I know of where droves of men live together, work on cars, and have one night-stands.
Well. That and any MTV Reality show. But that's beside the point. |

Over time, this song has kind of grown on me. Except, sometimes after listening to it I get "Now Three" stuck in my head. Do those two songs sound similar to anyone else? They don't sound the same, but they have a similar feel.
It really would fit on DttN (even though DttN is fine with the songs it has), I guess for now it just has to wander until it finds a home on an album. |

I do get a Now Three vibe from House. I think it's the eerie-pretty piano part. _________________ "Drowning my pain in lemonade. . . Singing along to 'feelin' alright'" |

| I was reading Jane Austen's "Mansfield Park" when "House" was released, so now I think they're irrevocably connected in my brain. |

Artistic decision, most likely. Vienna probably just didn't think it fit her concept for IT. Most "serious" popular musicians have treated LPs/CDs as extended song suites that have some sort of artistic coherence since about 1967 (Sgt. Pepper's). Probably, this movement will die out over time, as the iPod puts artistic coherence in the hands of the user, for better or worse, but Vienna clearly adheres to the idea of a CD as a work of art. Last year's "folk rock opera" The Hazards of Love by The Decemberists was a prominent, and pretty loopy imho, direct challenge to the anticipated/feared decline of the CD as an art form. _________________ Fred

It's worth noting though that Inland Territory itself is already described as a mix tape that didn't prioritize coherence as much in the first place. But I suppose one argument in line with that is that House didn't fit with any of the 3 "mix sections" of IT. |

But in spite of that, it is cohesive in a way, at least to me. The whole album deals with death and renewal.
Actually, I have this thought that all of Vienna's albums so far coordinate with a season.
Waking Hour: Winter
Warm Strangers Summer
Dreaming Through The Noise: Autumn
Inland Territory: Spring
I may be insane for thinking this. |

No, terraphim, that makes perfect sense to me too! Although the only ones I personally associated off the bat were WH and IT - WH because I bought it in the dead of winter, IT because it does sound very springlike.
That's so awesome, though. Vienna's music is great for all seasons! _________________ "How far will your chains let you run?

I just downloaded this song from the mailing list emails (can't believe I didn't sign up sooner), and am amazed by Vienna all over again. It's beautiful. I'm definitely getting a DttN vibe from this song: the eerie rippling from the piano, the bells, the viola, and somewhere, there is a faint echoing of everything. Definitely second the Legend of Zelda theme in the beginning.
What I don't really get is the distance between the lyrics and the music. The lyrics are about frat/sorority houses (I'm assuming), but I don't think that really lines up with the chilling-ness of the instrumentals. Thoughts?
Also, does anyone else feel like the song isn't quite finished? |

I agree with this assessment. I personally think it has a "demo" sound to it.
Not saying this is a bad thing at all. I just wouldn't expect it to show up on a full album in it's present form, as I don't think it's complete (production wise). _________________ Chris |
