Impromptu L.A. show - 9/10/09 @ Santa Monica

Postby Kalenabear » Fri Sep 11, 2009 8:51 pm

Vienna put on another magical performance last night, an impromptu show that was hosted by fellow fan, Holly Gleason, via Facebook! Though off-the-cuff, this show ranks pretty high on my list of VT concerts. It took place in a very casual, intimate room next to Santa Monica's International Youth Hostel, which usually hosts open mic musicians. There were probably no more than 30 people, which allowed Vienna to interact with all of us. Since impromptu, the setlist was comprised of song requests.

Not sure about the order, but here's the setlist. Anybody else remember?

Blue Caravan
Homecoming
Antebellum
Augustine (my request!)
My Medea
Recessional
The Tower
City Hall
Gravity (river version)
Passage
Lullabye for a Stormy Night

It really was the perfect venue for a last-minute performance. So glad I got to saunter the streets of Santa Monica's Third Street Promenade afterwards, too! Many thanks to all involved!

(I had an awkward fangirl moment, mumbling through giddy nerves when saying "hi" to Vienna. Heh! Weird, since I've always kept composure in past concerts...)

She played My Medea! And good job requesting Augustine :D I wish I had been there. I've always wanted to go to an all-request concert. The ones in the Bay Area haven't been small enough for that. Thanks for posting!

Cool to see someone requesting the old Gravity. Back to basics, as it were.

Vienna may be the most down-to-earth person in the world offstage (& some say that's true), but onstage she has real star power, and right after a show it's not surprising to feel the aftereffect. Maybe it would help to remember that Vienna also has reported having fangirl moments of her own.

Yeah! I'm so glad I somebody requested My Medea. It was the song that hooked me and made me a fan.

She actually chuckled when I requested it. "So many people send me emails about that song." And I had asked for 1Br/1Ba before the show, too. She was like, "Aw, you're requesting all the hard ones!"

Yeah, we got really lucky and I'm still amazed at how awesome Vienna is for doing it-- an impromptu show. This show outranks the Roxy concert in my book only b/c the audience was small enough that we got to sing along. Audience participation! :) I've always wanted to go up to the Bay Area!!

Of course! Gravity is a classic. In fact, it was played towards the end of the night right when I sensed that something was missing…Good thing somebody called it out. Now I’ve seen her perform Gravity live in all its derivatives (that we know of, at least). :)

Thanks for the reminder, Fred! :) But I’m still kicking myself over it, haha!

By the way, my friends say that I've been to too many VT concerts (4). Nonsense or aptly noted? If I could run an unofficial poll as to how many concerts y'all have been to....

My Medea was the song that made me a fan, too! The first song that I found and liked was Lullabye, but Medea brought it home.

The Bay Area's great, but I'm always so envious of the Socal peeps who get to go to movie premieres and stuff. I'm a big fangirl for those things, just not big enough to make the trip :D

I've been to 3 VT concerts, and going to #4 in October! And if she confirms this live album thing with a concert in SF, there's #5! Seriously, I don't think I can ever go to "too many VT concerts" haha.

I vote "nonsense". Many musicians get their starts with a relatively small group of irrationally devoted fans, who sustain them until they become part of some larger mainstream. Somebody has to be in that irrationally devoted core, and it might as well be you. Anyway, compared to someone like Chris from NJ, who saw Vienna 3 times in a weekend last spring if I recall correctly, you are not extreme. BTW I've been to 3 concerts, starting this past January, and have tickets for one more before the end of the year. My wife considers me slightly crazy, but is glad to go to Vienna's shows because otherwise it might be a folksinger. ("Oh, not that Dar Williams again!"--and she's seen her all of once.)

We vote "nonsense" also.

Here's a forum poll from a few years ago. Paul (The_Man_in_Blue) must be near or past 200 by now (2.75 yrs later).

We're only up to around 15-20 in three years w/ the most intense being 3x in 5 days. Slackers we are.

It's getting hard to maintain my modesty around here!

No 3x-a weekend of shows, but I'm at 41 total since 10/31/03. :D

The 3x weekend thing must've been someone else. But 41 shows is no slacker, that's for sure.

Thanks for the link, Micro! Per Tanthalas and Folkfan's suggestion, I just created a thread for an updated poll....

Wow. 41 times? Over 100 times? Three times in one week?! Okay, now I just feel silly for saying that I've gone to too many concerts. I am not worthy, haha! Also, Fred, you make an excellent point about musicians starting off with hardcore, loyal fans. We're all proud to be one! 8) (By the way, I checked out some of Dar Williams' stuff. Very cool. :))

As I was thinking about that poll in the other forum, I realized that Fred was right. I ran into Fred at the Emelin Theater on a Friday night; then Vienna had two shows in Morganville NJ that Sunday afternoon. So it was technically three shows is that same weekend. 8)
