I caught their act at a free summer concert series in a local park in Huntington, NY this past Saturday. (Yes, the day after Vienna's Westhampton Beach show. What a weekend!) For those not familiar, Pete & Maura Kennedy are a married NYC folk duo with a very slight & occasional country twang. (I think one or both is/are from Texas originally.) Pete plays virtuoso electric-acoustic lead in a style reminiscent of Richard Thompson, plus ukulele and electric sitar (!). Maura plays rhythm guitar and takes most of the lead vocals. She's got a great voice. Their original songs are mostly up-tempo and infused with throwback counterculture optimism and, often, Eastern/New Age spirituality. In many ways they tap into the good side of the spirit of the 60's (even though they're much too young to have lived it the first time), & they even do interesting Beatles covers. They're a great live act, and they've got a lot of recorded music as well. They tour a lot, generally in smaller venues where you can see them "up close and personal". If they come your way, you might want to check 'em out.
