White Light (Lyrics)

Postby roofboy179 » Thu Feb 05, 2009 9:22 am

All of a sudden a conversation turns
And everyone concerned is looking down
The glitzy party is right here in the room
But no one can assume the high ground

Oh, it almost caught up with you,
Caught up with you there
Oh, you should've thought of this, my friend

If you knew it was wrong, why did you do it?
You don't know, you didn't mean to,
It slipped your mind,
And it feels so good to feed a habit
You're just making the most of your borrowed time
Waiting for the white light

So heading home you swear that you'll be good
To everything you should, and know the facts (?)
But in the morning, you're back to petty needs
Tragedy recedes to photographs

Oh, it hasn't caught up with you,
Caught up with you yet,
No, it hasn't talked you into quit (?)

Well, if you knew it was wrong, why did you do it?
You don't know, you didn't mean to,
It slipped your mind,
Is it okay, because everybody does it?
This whole party is rolling on borrowed time
Waiting for the white light

Shine down, wipe it all out again,
Show me how, it doesn't matter in the end

If you knew it was wrong, why did you do it?
You don't know, you didn't mean to,
It slipped your mind,
Is it okay, because everybody does it?
No laws are broken if we're all committing the same crime

Well, I know it's wrong, why do I do it?
I don't know, I don't mean for it to slip my mind
It just takes so much to break a habit
You know where I'm aware we are out of time (?)
Am I waiting for a white light?

Again, please correct my errors.

And, if I shouldnt be posting these... please tell me o.o

I thought it was "the guilty party"?

Also, "No laws are broken if we're all committing the same crime."
"You've made us swear our souls to you
And blamed us for your poisoned grace."

From Internal Territory's liner notes:

White Light

all of a sudden the conversation turns
and everyone concerned is looking down
guilty party is right here in the room
but no one can assume the high ground
oh it almost caught up with you
caught up with you then
oh you should've thought of this my friend

if you knew it was wrong why did you do it
you don't know, you didn't mean to, it slipped your mind
and it feels so good to feed a habit
you're just making the most of your borrowed time
waiting for the white light

heading home you swear that you'll be good
do everything you should, and know the facts
but in the morning you're back to petty needs
tragedy recedes to photographs
oh it hasn't caught up with you
caught up with you yet
no it hasn't taught you when to quit

if you knew it was wrong why did you do it
you don't know, you didn't mean to, it slipped your mind,
it is OK because everybody does it
this whole party is rolling on borrowed time
waiting for the white light

shine down
wipe it all out again,
show me how
it doesn't matter in the end

if you knew it was wrong why did you do it
you don't know, you didn't mean to, it slipped your mind
it is OK because everybody does it
no laws are broken if we're all committing the same crime

but I know it's wrong, why do I do it
I don't know, I don't mean for it to slip my mind
it just takes so much to break a habit
even when I'm aware we are out of time
am I waiting for a white light

It sounds like the onset of a police raid on a drug ring. The white light would be the searchlight...or the light at the end of the tunnel when someone has an out-of-body experience (due to overdosing or whatever).
I believe in airplanes.

To me, this is about a group of hypocritical religious people who will easily point fingers and throw stones at one of their own when that person's sins are made public, but none of whom want to admit they do the same stuff behind closed doors. The "white light" in this case would be some sort of magical whisking away to Heaven that they're waiting around for, because they feel that they are above the rest of the world and deserve to be taken away to a better place, rather than putting in any sort of real effort to make this place better.

(Disclaimer: I'm a religious person. And I've heard a lot of songs by religious people commenting on this tendency within the fold. So I'm not offended by it, nor is offending anyone else my intent in describing the song this way.)

I'm more feeling a corporate scandal. Like, the other side of Whatever You Want.

Or maybe pirating music...

It could probably describe almost any situation where people publicly say something is wrong but privately indulge themselves.

But if it describes the reason why our economy sucks, then Vienna gets bonus points for the subtle sideswipe.

Not that I actually think this is what the song means, but my initial reaction to this was thinking about global warming. I think all of us do a bunch of things out of habit that are hurtful to the environment, but we keep doing it anyway because it's so hard to change.

Maybe it's because I'm always feeling guilty about the environmentally-unfriendly things I do. :P

In that case, the song should be called "Hope (We're Not) on Fire".

Before I seriously respond to this thread (I don't really know what to think, so I'm stalling), I have to say that I always hear "white line" in my head. Whether it's some reference to a roadway or a line of blow, you can be the judge, but I have to mentally switch gears when I hear the song to remember the word is "light."

Don't say I never told you I'm bad with lyrics unless I really pay attention.

I was hearing "white lie" at first, which interestingly is one of those things that it seems like everyone does and many people criticize others for doing.

That's consistent with my current interpretation, too.

The only note I have on it from Vienna so far is that it's about doing something wrong even though you know you shouldn't...like leaving right before your gig starts.

This is something we've asked each while deep in some project or another:

The light at the end of the tunnel: is it daylight or is it a train :?:

Or writing your setlist down as you are sitting at the keyboard and about to start your show! She would never do that, would she?

Actually saw her do this for one of her shows on Cayamo.
