I see that she's been wearing glasses quite a lot recently. I wonder if she ran out of contacts, or something?

Oooh, another Q&A Question d:

I'd love to hear how these recordings came out. If at all possible, I'd like to see about getting copies that we can post on archive.org. To date very few of the European dates are represented there.

At the minimum, I'd love to hear a few snippets.

I can think of two good reasons, having travelled a lot. First, it's just difficult travelling with contacts, particularly keeping them clean and everything - most require a minimum 4 hour soak overnight, which can be hard to come by. Second, if your eyes are getting tired or dry, they can be pretty uncomfortable. Vienna may not have wanted to mess with them.

Or, as you say, maybe she ran out. :D

My, what absolutely gorgeous photographs! Thanks so much for sharing them.

I hope the audio recordings turned out well for both of you.

I am sorry to say that the recording level was set a bit too high - but the overload indicatior not flashing - - it was my first real experience with the H2.

So most of my material is lost; at least some quiet parts survived. Here is an appetizer for the impatients among us. - And another one.

But I plan to be at the show tomorrow too so I'll have a 2nd try. BTW the photos are from approx. 60 ft distance so I should be able to produce much better results.

Edited to repair the dead links. Thanks to WS for hosting.

whr,

It sounds like the AGC was on and compensated for you having the levels too high. I don't know this unit, but it may not register an overload if it thinks AGC is taking care of it. The problem is that you can get some artifacts if AGC has to work too hard.

My recommendation would be to record in 24-bit mode and turn down the levels lower than you think. Ideally, AGC should be off or never come into play at all. With 24-bit recording, you can get away with lower record levels and boost everything after the fact without losing anything or introducing noise.

I listened to your recordings, and they sound pretty good (pretty good means not excellent, but no real problems...I'm a hard critic, particularly on my own recordings). I can hear where it sounds like the AGC is kicking in, and I definitely hear a bit of background noise - were you near an air vent? It's possible it's my computer as well. Also, Vienna seems to come from the left slightly. Is this how the room was mixed, or were you left of center?

I had definitely no AGC/limiter or whatsoever activated - just linear 16 bit recording. I doubt that 24 bit helps as the noise of the mic preamps (all built into the tiny box) may dominate.

The whole unit was sitting on the seat in front of me which was luckily empty. Vienna was indeed at the left side as I was sitting directly beside the right wall. The venue was nearly sold out (about 400 people) so I was lucky with the empty seat but was very much in the back.

I am not sure how much of the distortion is caused by processing trough audacity and MP3 coding - I also burned an ordinary CD from the WAV and it sounds much better on the Hifi set.

But now I go to bed! (while audacity is applying a "broadcast limiter plug-in" to the first session recording. :)

Really? I didn't hear the types of dynamics I would normally expect. Very strange. I would still try 24 bit, as you should be able to get around overloading. If the preamp noise dominates, that's a problem.

Neither should cause too much. Mp3 can introduce some problems, but at high bitrates should be fine. It can vary based on what plug-ins you are using with Audacity, and the order in which they are applied. Normally, I do as little as possible to the recordings. I usually apply a bit of normalization, some volume adjustments perhaps during the applause. For a series of house concerts I record for a friend, I apply a "mastering" tool to give it some oomph, but that's only to sweeten things and even out the dynamics. For the really important or good stuff, I leave them alone.

Here two snippets of my recording.

Recorded AB@44.1Khz, 16bit, Position: direct in front of mixing desk.

Had some interference noise on left channel, which i suspect coming from some light/ other equipment since it was kind of hf ticking noise. I think i eq'd it out quite well.
Applied little eq and slight (!) compression.

Recording has a relatively high amount of noise since i had to crank up the pre's very much, since my mics have really low output levels.

On first track (whatever you want) you hear the adjusting of the levels, but i think the rest is pretty flawless.
The only thing i want to do before releasing the whole show is to apply fade-in outs between sets and to adjust the levels between applause and music. Since i'm very busy right now this can take 1 or 2 weeks, but it will get out eventually!

After approval of the setlist i will upload it to archive.org.

Two samples:

http://borrmann-it.de/vt_karlsruhe_whitelight.mp3.

Have fun (and if you like straight guitar rock also check out my own band www.skiptrack.de ;) ). Regards, Micha.

Thanks Micha for sharing this.
I'm looking forward for your archive.org version of this show. I'm listening to your myspace right now and will read your website with a German dictionary at hand...
I've just downloaded tanthalas's archive on when reading the free downloads post - BTW Thanks Tanthalas ;)

EDIT : Micha, I like your band's song "Last Night I Sold My Soul On Ebay" and "Turn the Tables" reminds me of the expression Ang Mo used when depicting one episode of "The Prisoner".

I haven't seen the setlist posted yet, but as long as there's no unreleased songs it should be fine. Thanks for taping! I'm so sorry to hear that after all that trouble the board recording was turned down. Looking forward to hearing the mic recording once you're done.

We are used to waiting, as we are always waiting on album releases to post the good stuff. I'm sure we'll be excited to hear it in June or whenever you can post it.
