This was my first ever ever VT concert - amazing, better than I could ever have hoped (remember your first VT concert experience!)

Got back from Düsseldorf half an hour ago. Here's my preliminary version of the setlist whilst I can still read my in-the-dark handwriting
[since collated with Kaoru's setlist]:

    1. Enough To Go By
    2. Blue Caravan
    3. Whatever You Want
    4. Gravity [Rippling Lake / RiverBend version; Alex on cajon]
    ...seamlessly linked to...
    5. Unwritten Letter #1
    6. Transcontinental, 1:30 a.m.
    7. Hope On Fire
    8. City Hall [without The Dance]

    - Interval -

    9. Passage [a cappella, no micro]
    10. Green Island Serenade
    11. Homecoming [Alex - backing vocal]
    12. Now Three
    13. Recessional
    14. 1Br/1Ba incl. Cecilia (Simon & Garfunkel)
    15. I Don't Feel So Well
    16. Harbor

    Encores:

    17. Lullabye For A Stormy Night
    18. Soon Love Soon [with audience participation]
    19. Sweet Baby James (James Taylor) - V's first public cover of this song her parents used to sing to her.

Duesseldorf Review

First of all - it was one of the best concert I have ever been.... Very Happy

The concert began at 9.15 pm and I have no idea when it ended because time had no meaning afterwards… Vienna got standing ovations and the audience didn’t want to let her go…. so much to say about the usually “reserved & well mannered” German audience (she even made them sing Shocked ).). There were about 300 people (?) in the Zakk last night and especially the Chinese faction gave an extra “cheer” when Vienna started to play “Green Island Serenade”.
From the moment Vienna started to sing she got the audience mesmerized. I thought I knew Vienna’s voice from her CDs but hearing her live blew me away. What a beautiful voice!!!
I guess Beethoven himself would have been honoured to write a song for her… Smile

Her musicians Dina Maccabee, Jessica (?) & Alex Wong were absolutely great. My friend said that Dina reminded him somehow of Scully ?! (from the X-File Laughing ) and I can honestly say that “Dina Scully” & “Jessica Mulder” investigated perfectly the mysteries & beauty of music last night.
Alex Wong definitely did the best “work out” – wow, this guy can really drum (& sing). I’ve heard that Napoleon could do five things at the same time but this is nothing compared to Alex playing the drums with his right arm & feet while playing the “Glockenspiel” with his left arm and singing the background vocal in “Harbor”. No Waterloo for Alex Wong. Wink

Vienna, Dina, Jessica & Alex – “vielen, vielen Dank” for an unforgettable evening. Smile See you in Cologne.

About the set list:

1. Enough to go by
2. Blue Caravan
3. Whatever you want
4. Gravity (Lake version)
5. Unwritten letter # 1
6. Transcontinental, 1:30 am
7. Hope on fire
8. City Hall
(Break)
9. Passage
10. Green Island Serenade
11. Homecoming
12. Now three
13. Recessional
14. 1BR/ 1 BA includ. Cecilia (Simon & Garfunkel)
15. I don’t feel so well
16. Harbor
(Encore)
17. Lullabye for a stormy night
18. Soon love
(Encore)
19. Sweet Baby James (James Taylor)

PS: Rotkehlchen, 1:30 am and still no sleep? But yes, you are right – who needs to sleep anyway after a night like that?!

PS. Idgie and Nummie, it was great meeting you. Sorry, I didn’t say “Auf Wiedersehen” but I am sure I will see you again at a Vienna Teng concert.

PS: Thanks Idgie for the photos…. I know a certain someone who is still crying silent tears about her camera Wink

Wow, that's all I can say right now. Vienna and band simply blew me away yesterday.
I recorded pretty much the entire set on my digital camera, but my memory card ran out of space at the end so I'm missing 'Soon Love, Soon' and 'Sweet Baby James'.

Right now I am sitting at the Airport waiting for my flight back to London, so once I'm home I will convert all the videos and post them to youtube.

It was really nice to be able to have a quick chat with the band afterwards. Jessica told me that I didn't sound very German and asked if I was from the US(no, I just lived there for 2 years) and Dina told me that I was wearing a nice top Very Happy

I also managed to chase Alex down so he could sign my CD and he told me that they'll be coming back to Europe in the fall. Very Happy

I was one of the last people to talk to Vienna and my camera battery died just as my mom took a picture of Vienna and me...so I don't know if there actually is a picture on the memory card...will find out later.

Also it was nice to have a quick chat to some Forum members.

will write more later when I'm back in London, by that time I might also be able to let you know the Setlist of tonight's gig as my mom decided after Vienna blew her away yesterday that she needs to attend tonight's gig.

About the set list

Thanks for your review and for your setlist: I've now amended mine appropriately.

"Gravity" was definitely the new version, where Alex adds the ripple (wire brush on cajon).
As
CandaceC (in Vienna's Kitchen) wrote:
It starts with "Lake" and then flows.

I favour "RiverBend" as a further possible title, in honour of the courageous Iraqi blogger.

I sat in the 3rd row level with Vienna's keyboard, and so had a near-perfect view of all 4 musicians (though Jessica was partially obscured by her music desk) and a live insight into the way they work together as a group.

A highlight was to exchange a few words with Vienna. She's approachable, natural, and has that very special gift (shared by only a few) of making you the most important person in the world for those few minutes she's in conversation with you. That's remarkable in view of the thousands of fans she must have met at many, many concerts.

From Dina I learned that the City Hall Dance (which I had missed in Düsseldorf) should appear on the long-rumoured DVD when it is finally released.

Sorry I didn't get to meet anyone from the Forum. From time to time I wonderied: "Could that be Nummie? Might that be IDgIE with that digital camera in the front row?", and had sort of hoped to find a recogniseable huddle of Forum members somewhere in Vienna's vicinity afterwards, but didn't... (possibly I was distracted by Vienna)

But perhaps some of you guessed who I was (unless you were distracted by Vienna, too)?

Marina: In retrospect I think it must have been your Mom who spoke to me near the stage after the concert and asked me about time and venue for Bremen. I'm glad she managed to make it, and even send you her setlist.

It was actually 1:45 am when we arrived back in Dortmund. And I didn't get to sleep before 4 am.

Sounds like a great concert. I can't wait to hear and see any recordings that turn up (I saw some are posted above but I can't watch right now). I also can't wait to hear some of the new stuff - Cecelia and Sweet Baby James, to be exact.

Again, wish I could have been there. *sigh*

Okay, all of my videos are posted on youtube and I have edited my other post(scroll up a little bit) please don't expect too much. It's just a digital camera that was resting on my leg most of the time as I didn't want to watch the gig through my viewfinder, so it's mostly video of Vienna and not of the band.
Also, during 'Jubilation' I simply had to clap along, forgetting that I was filming, so it's a little bit shaky.

A few tid bits:

*Vienna told us that they were very much enjoying the German breakfast in the Hotels.

*She also told us that we were the 'best clapping audience' *lol*

*Apparently she and Alex get mistaken for wrong Nationalities a lot, and people guess that Alex is either Japanese or because of the Cajon Peruvian.
Vienna : "that's were you got your cool shoes, up in the mountains"
Alex : "Yes, they're made of goats leather" (lift up feet to show us his cool sneaker) Wink

Here some of my pictures: (clickable Thumbnails)

The venue:

The Posters outside the Venue:

My mom and 'Vienna' (I wasn't 100% sure we would get to meet her afterwards) *lol*

Me and 'Vienna'

The Setlist(thanks to Kaoru)

For some reason there was a bed right next to the Stage, maybe in case the artist feels sleepy *lol* :

Vienna and me, I look extremely excited and she looks tired, but my camera died just after this pic was taken, so I could get a better one:

I'm back from Germany too!

The concert was great, suprising that Kaoru has met me because I have not seen you, you must have taken me for someone else. Laughing
I was the guy taking some pics in the front on the right.

I see my setlist isn't needed, since the current one is correct.
Fabulous show! My first with the whole band.
The audience was really enthousiastic and it was sold out really.

The version of Hope on Fire I liked very much, see it from 2:10 minutes on the video by Marina for instance - Great but the whole concert in online video seems like a bit much to me.

The sound was not perfect but surely good enough.
Pictures I took are mostly shaken so they cannot be displayed in larger size:

I like to record concerts I attend *for myself* and am always happy to share with other fans if they are interested. Of course I would prefer a better sound recording, but I simply don't have the money to buy audio recording equipment.
