I first heard the singer/songwriter Holly Brook on the TV show Conviction (now sadly cancelled), where they played Still Love from her then unreleased debut album, Like Blood Like Honey. I thought, wow, who's that?? There were no music credits, so I googled and found a site that lists the songs played on the show and found Holly. She's all of 20, but her sophisticated voice, music, and lyrics display a maturity beyond her years. I picked up her album, but to be honest, I initially only liked Still Love, What I Wouldn't Give, and maybe one or two more. The other songs weren't in the same jazzy style as the ones I liked, so I was a bit disappointed. However, weeks later I listened to the album again and discovered multiple gems; it was like a whole new album! I don't know what changed; maybe I just felt more receptive to Holly's music at the time. Nowadays I think her album is a masterpiece; she has a great future ahead of her.
Once I rediscovered her music, I checked out her site and found that she was playing at the Great American Music Hall on 10/3, which was only 2 days away! I quickly snapped up a ticket. She was actually only opening for another young singer/songwriter, 18 year old Teddy Geiger, but whatever. She sang only 5 or 6 songs, on piano accompanied by acoustic guitar and on solo acoustic guitar, but it was great to see her live. The sound was just ok, which was surprising because Vienna sounded great there, but I was on the floor instead of the balcony because they closed off the latter due to the place being only about 1/3 full, even with all the screaming teenage girls who were there for Teddy. Long lines formed at the merch table after Holly's performance. I asked her when she would be headlining, but she didn't know.
