antebellum

After listening to this song twice and making out the words during the second time around (with the help of hearing Vienna's explanation about the song), I'm pretty sure that the song is titled Antebellum.

The chorus roughly goes like this (I don't recall the words exactly):
i know the borderlines are true between us
keep your weapons down, keep the wounded safe
i know our antebellum innocence is
never meant to see the light of our armistice day

Though the war symbolism is everywhere from the lyrics to the marching drum beat, the song is actually about two people who love and care for each other very much but realize after being together for awhile that the best thing for the both of them is to be at a distance. Thus the lines at the end:
you'll stay here
i'll go home
seasons keep on marching

you'll go home
i'll stay here
(something)

This song is currently fighting with Kansas in my head for the title of saddest song ever. :( (Though I suppose you can argue that this song isn't entirely depressing, unlike Kansas.)

As usual, beautiful and well summarized, Calvin.

I'd like to add that it does have a feel of hopefulness. If that isn't the quite-right word, it's the acceptance of a situation, and the strength to live with the decision.

Kansas won my heart as my favorite among the new ones a long time ago. This one is definitely a close second though. :)

I guess I just happen to like depressing songs, darnit.

That sounds sad but beautiful. Vienna is such a poet - what a concept!

My mom will love this one; she's a Civil War nut.

Can we find clips of Antebellum or Kansas anywhere? Youtube? Or, did you all hear these songs live? By the way, thanks for posting the lyrics! :)

Nah, I've only heard Antebellum live twice, but I was able to discern and remember the lyrics of the chorus pretty easily the second time around. I've heard Kansas live twice too I think (once at The Independent and once at Bazaar Cafe), but I also have a recording of the Independent show (<3 Bob).

Since this stuff is "next-album" content, I wouldn't be able to post recordings of these songs even if I had them. :P

I'll post the full lyrics to Kansas (I have them memorized by now :P) if that's allowed and if people want to see them though.

Of COURSE we want to see them! I need something gloomy before I sleep.

If it's not allowed, you'll find out when Michele jumps on you
- but we'll have read the lyrics by then... ;)

By the way, I didn't mean to encourage any illegal activity. I just know that Vienna greenlights youtube videos of her performances (...right?). I'd be more than happy with just the full lyrics. It makes the anticipation of the next album much better! :) Can't wait til it comes out.

Live recordings are okay as long as it's not material that's going to be released in a new album. :P
