whats the style

Postby legio_ix » Wed Jan 25, 2006 9:02 pm

can somebody tell me what the style of this song is? i presume it has a technical name. by style i mean the pure vocals with some sort of background noise or very muted instruments in the background, i think sombody mentioned "cappella" but i've no idea what this is. the only other example i can think of is in "Montage" from the evita soundtrack (madonna, banderas etc) theres a line, "The best show in town was the crowd Outside the Casa Rosada crying, "Eva Peron"" its a sort of echo of a line from oh what a circus as che wanders through the mourners, uts backed by precussion and a sort of echo.

curious in ignorance :D

"A cappella" is what it is called when there is no instrumental accompaniment, as is the case in Passage.

I think you mentioned in another post that you were interested in hearing more stuff by Tori Amos. Well, another example of an "a cappella" song that you might want to look into is Tori's "Me And A Gun". Chilling.

ah! Knowledge, thanks. And your right it is chilling, I guess passage could be referred to as chilling as well, it’s definitely heightened by the purely vocal effect. finally located a friend with lots of tori amos cds so will listen to all those and decide on the best on to buy to start with.

ps its quite funny theres a brand of apple juice drink over here called copella so i keep thinking of apple juice whenever i see cappella :D

I know this is supposed to be about "passage" but somebody mentioned "Say Uncle" so I'd like to say something about it too.

"Say Uncle" always makes me think of my Grandpa for some reason. He passed away way back when I was in 7th grade (I'm in my first year of college now).

For this your sons and widow gather with us 'round the table
To form a healing circle for on our demise

When I hear these lines I recall the prayer meetings we had at my Grandma's house. I like to think about my Grandpa though. We had some good times when I was little, like how we used to eat apple sauce or neopolatin (sp?) ice cream together in his favorite chair (a grey-blue lazy boy recliner. My dad has one too).

Hi all,

I've just discovered a beautiful choregraphy of 6 girls in a dance competition inspired by Vienna Teng 's song Passage on youtube.

Very good interpretation from VT's lyrics of the song.

"Passage" is one of those songs that really gets under your skin. It is so tragic and complicated. I covered it* on a whim last year, and when my mother found the mp3, she freaked, thinking I'd written the song myself, worrying I was "disturbed." I had to explain that no, I didn't write it, and no, the woman who did write it is not disturbed, just incredibly empathic.

*I did it no justice at all, but no one can hope to be comparable to Vienna, so I'm satisfied with my "unsatisfactory" cover. 8)

Hey terraphim86, just heard of your cover and your voice is great with the echoing effects plus the sound that recalls me of a drop of water that spreads wavelengths or like a stone thrown on a a lake ... with a strangely distorted way as if it was to represent the wavelengths of the different times described in the lyrics, in a kind of parallelism background...

You did a really good work and it surprised me in a good way !

About mothers, I don't know how many of them are on the same wavelength about their kid's musical tastes ... mine is making fun of me and I won't report here what opinions she has about VT's singing style .... pardon me...
