Oh only 3....that is hard but I'll change it to:

Waking Hour: Decade and One, Daughter, Gravity
Warm Strangers: Homecoming, Shasta, Harbor
DTTN: Ponchartrain, I Don't Feel So Well, Now Three

Hmm. Are these the songs themselves, or their particular expressions on the albums? I rather like Drought, for example, but cringe at its production on Waking Hour and can't bear to listen to it at all. =)

But okay:

WH: Daughter, Between, Decade and One
WS: Feather Moon, Passage*, The Atheist Christmas Carol
DTTN: Recessional, Transcontinental, Love Turns 40

DTTN's a tough one. There's a lot of good stuff on it.

* Utterly brilliant, but I can't listen to it.

Interpret it how you like, as long as you can limit your choices to three per album either way (which I see you've managed to do).

I love "Drought". I hate how long it takes to fade in, and it could have a little more power in the production department, but it's still a gorgeous song (picking 3 favorites from WH was very hard for me, as there are roughly 8 songs on that record that I think are flat-out awesome).

A lot of people seem to have that problem, but I'm glad that so many of us are able to respect "Passage" (and also "Ponchartrain") despite the difficulty of listening to it. It's never been a problem for me, but then sometimes I wonder if I'm ruining the impact of the song for myself by listening to it casually whenever I listen to the rest of the album.

My Media, The Atheist Christmas Carol, Harbor

Signal Fire, Rainwalk Song, Gravity (Lake Version)

What do you mean you didn't have a catagory for unpublished and covers? ;)

GOOD call!

Waking Hour: Momentum, Drought, Soon Love Soon
Warm Strangers: My Medea, Homecoming, Harbor
Dreaming Through the Noise: Recessional, City Hall, Blue Caravan

Unreleased: Rain in England, Signal Fire, Rainwalk Song
Covers: That's Where I'll Be, Leaving Atlanta, Cannonball (and I'm *sure* Arizona would be number one on this list, if only I heard it... woe is me!)

now three

I sometimes think people starting polls like this and then limiting it to three per album take a sadistic pleasure in watching us struggling to pick the top three.

Waking Hour - Daughter, Erics song and Unwritten letter
Warm Strangers - Homecomming, My Medea and Shine
DTTN - Recessional, Blue Caravan and Nothing without you

changes by the day tho! :D

Waking Hour: Momentum, Soon Love Soon, Decade and One
Warm Strangers: Mission Street, Anna Rose, Homecoming
Dreaming Through the Noise: Recessional, City Hall, Blue Caravan

I agree, it's hard to pick just three, especially from DTTN...

Waking Hour: Eric's Song, Momentum, Say Uncle
Warm Strangers: Mission Street, Atheist Christmas Carol, Green Island Serenade
Dreaming Through The Noise: Recessional, Nothing Without You, Whatever You Want

Seems like I'm the first to vote for Say Uncle, surprisingly.

I was gonna point that out if you hadn't beat me to it. It's not my favorite on WH, but not a bad song by any means.

What's more surprising to me is that "Recessional", my least favorite song from DTTN, is in the lead.

Waking Hour: The Tower, Unwritten Letter #1, Enough To Go By
Warm Strangers: Mission Street, Shasta (Carrie's Song), Harbor
Dreaming Through The Noise: Recessional, Now Three, Whatever You Want

Unreleased/Covers: Leaving Atlanta, Boy at the Piano, That's Where I'll Be

In a live show, it's a different story, especially for DTTN. One of my favorite songs to watch live has been 1BR/1BA, but the album production is lacking. And I would love Unwritten Letter #1 regardless of whether it showed up on a CD or the back of a cereal box, but the live version blows the recording out of the water.

Interesting to see how diverse our tastes are actually, even within the range of the same artist - even the same album!

Say Uncle is definitely one of the best songs on the album... it's especially meaningful to me too, since my family went through something almost exactly as the song describes.

What's more surprising to me is that "Recessional", my least favorite song from DTTN, is in the lead.

I think its both mine and all my friends' favorite song on the album... it's just crazy addictive. :)

It's great to see that a lot of people like the radically different songs on DTTN though (the ones that depart from the previous style of Vienna's song). I personally haven't gotten used to it (maybe the songs are a little too slow/dark for my taste)...

I actually started this thread because I figured it would illustrate that.

I have an uncle who basically has 6 months to live due to cancer, so I'm guessing this one's going to start to become difficult for me to listen to, even though he and I weren't that close.

My problem with it is that it seems to start/stop too much - the rhythm and flow of it feel rather detached/undefined, which was also my problem with "Decade and One". The story being told also feels so abstract - not that it's bad songwriting, but it makes it harder for me to connect what's being said. Other songs on the album may be slow, sparse, or only defined in vague poetic terms, but I still feel like they "flow" well and this song just brings things to a quiet halt for me where I feel like I have to strain to hear the important things that are happening.

Great idea for a song, though.

"Dark" hasn't bothered me for many years now. In terms of the music, I find minor key to be delicious, and in terms of the lyrics, I think it's brave that Vienna can go to such places and find such haunting beauty. "Slow" is only a problem for me when it creates the "flow" problems I mentioned above., when too much time is spent at the same slow tempoes, or when the rhythm is very loosely defined for an extended period of time. Most of Vienna's songs are relatively "slow" and I've never had a problem with this.
