Economics of selling music

Postby Fred » Fri Apr 16, 2010 8:30 pm

Passing along this post originally from the Atlantic Monthly about the economics of selling CDs and MP3s, and getting paid (if you can call it that) for streaming. I guess the occasion for publishing it might be Record Store Day, which is today. Just like Vienna has said in her posts in the past, it's pretty dismal; there's really no decent living in it for people selling CDs in the thousands or tens of thousands over the lifetime of the record, which means indie musicians are living on their tour income. So for Pete's sake go out and see a concert. (Not that anybody on this board has any problem with that.)
Ain't praying for miracles, I'm just down on my knees
Listening for the song behind everything I think I know
And everything I think I know is just static on the radio.
