LaTeX

Postby telestoat » Fri Apr 17, 2009 1:26 pm

The following might interest someone if they use LaTeX. I was inspired by the title of Vienna's post to see it rendered. Just save it in a file viennatengisawesome.tex

\documentclass[12pt]{article}

\usepackage{hyperref}
\usepackage{amsmath}
\usepackage{listings}

\begin{document}

\section{Introduction}
Vienna Teng is awesome.
\url{http://viennateng.com/scrapbook/?p=88}

\section{Equations}
postcard from the studio, day
\begin{equation}
\sum_{n=0}^\infty 2^{-n}
\end{equation}

\section{\LaTeX{}}
\lstset{language=[LaTeX]TeX}
\lstinputlisting{viennatengisawesome.tex}

\end{document}

Very nice.

I wrote my dissertation entirely in LaTeX.

I still prefer it to Word. But it's tougher to work with collaborators in LaTeX.

Did you try to translate and transcribe it in Tolkien's Tengwar ?
I'm off topic I know ... but that question just jumped into my walking-why-head ;)

[EDIT 24/05/09 : anyone here would like to create|invent Tengpeace to replace Tengwar ? ... just kidding ... so many days of low time in VT forum ... Enjoy the sun !]

Gah. I was just thinking that I really wish I'd asked Vienna last night after the show how she knows LaTeX. I got a huge kick out of that scrapbook post. Instead I said something along the lines of "since I started grad school you've released three albums... and I'm still in grad school ***sob***"

That doesn't seem too bad. (What, about 5 yrs?) Took me 6.5 yrs, and I was the second member (out of 4) of my entering cohort to get out. Vienna's pretty speedy about releasing new albums, compared to some.

I was actually the first person I know if to do my entire thesis, plots, figures, captions, all within LaTeX. Just prior, many people had to hand-insert
figures, axis labels, etc.

Of course, I'm also probably one of the last ones to do that- Word templates were released shortly afterwards, not that I would have ever touched those! :)

Hmm- with a username like that, I suspect Physics? What are you studying, where?

(Astronomy, UTexas is my answer from days gone by)

It's a text-based type-setting system.

You use commands like {\it this} to format beautiful-looking text! :)

Let's just say I started in a Physics PhD program... I am finishing (?) in an Electrical Engineering program. It has none of the sexiness of physics... nor any applicability to the real world, sadly. But my equations still look very pretty in LaTeX :P

:lol: I'm not quite sure I wasn't lost BEFORE even that!

I think this message board probably has the highest average IQ out there... Vienna seems to attract fans of "above average" intelligence, doesn't she? :D
