Going Green....Music?

Postby CandaceC » Sun Sep 21, 2008 2:28 am

We've talked a lot about how music production is getting more ecologically responsible, but this actually isn't about that.

The elementary school I'm working for now has a theme of "Going Green". A third grade teacher asked me if I would teach her class a song related to "Going Green" and recycling, or being an ecologically responsible human. I've thought a lot about it, and let me tell you, finding kids songs is hard! I'm ready to just throw in the towel and settle for the Captain Planet theme song...

But I just wanted to ask our grownups their thoughts on some songs where the content is about going green or being conscious of our planet.

Calypso by John Denver. I am not sure if I spelled it correctly. Mother Nature's Son by the Beatles.

So I reached back into my childhood, and figured, if Schoolhouse Rock didn't do one, no one did. Best I could do:

"The Energy Blues"

I also thought of Kermit the Frog singing "It's Not Easy Being Green," but he's talking more about the color. :-)

Brown Trees by Anna Dagmar is all about the consequences of pollution. Sad but poignant.

Can't believe I've missed this thread previously!!!!

www.tomchapin.com (yes, Harry Chapin's brother)

Tom has:

#1 - Been doing GREAT kids music for years (and it's the type of stuff that mom & dad won't get sick of in the car, unlike, say Barney or Raffi)

#2 - Also been focused on the environment LONG before "going green" was cool. I mean with an entire album titled "Mother Earth" (and partcularly a song on there called "Good Garbage"), how can you go wrong?

Check it out. It's what you're looking for! (in response to the original post... although I am probably waaaay late with my answer.... very sorry!)

Not sure if I would consider John Prine's "Paradise" a children's song or not, but it is about losing one's childhood to, "the progress of man."
